Pont du Gard

A DAY IN PROVENCE

Welcome in the Alpilles mountains range, in the hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence, probably one of the most visited village of the area!!! More than 2 millions of visitor per year, for less than 500 inhabitants. Walking around the village, you will discover how a traditional village looks like!

The next stop will be at the impressive Pont du Gard. This bridge represents the best preserved part of the Roman waterbridge , used during 500 years by the Roman people , in order to supply Nîmes in drinkable water. Definitely, a must see in Provence!

Then, you will join the best preserved city-wall in France : Avignon.

Have a look at the famous Pont d'Avignon located on the Rhone river and you will have the possibility to visit inside the building which was the house of the catholic popes for 100 years : the majestic Pope's Palace.(entrance fee not included).

Before to drive back to Marseille, enjoy a wine-tasting in the village of Châteauneuf du Pape, famous wine part of the highest quality from the South of the Rhone river valley.

PROVENCAL MARKETS AND LAVENDER IN LUBERON

When you are in Provence, a favourite past-time that is popular among the locals as well as the tourists are the traditional open air markets held in different villages on different days. On this tour, you will get the opportunity to stroll in one of the following :

  • Thursdays in Roussillon : Colourful village as ochre mining was once the biggest economy in this village for its fine pigments.

  • Sundays in l'Isle sur la Sorgue : A small town filled with antique dealers and flea markets. The water wheels on the Sorgue River are the highlights.

Along the day, you will be visiting Gordes; voted as 'One of the most beautiful villages in France' with a splendour panoramic view. A quick stop at the 'boutique' of the Lavender Museum (closed in January) whereby you will be introduced to a full range of AOC labelled lavender essential oil and cosmetic products.

On the way to Bonnieux, catch a glimpse of Pont Julien, a Roman built bridge that dates back from the 1st century B.C. Some free time to explore another stone-built cliffside village with its windy roads lined with cafés and boutiques of local products.

To end the day, you will travel through the winding Combe de Lourmarin, which separates the Petit and Grand Luberon to reach the village of Lourmarin for a photo stop of its 15th Renaissance-styled castle.

Exceptionally from mid-June to mid-July only, you will admire the beautiful lavender blossom at the 12th century Cistercian Senanque Abbey.

SAINT-REMY DE PROVENCE, LES BAUX AND ARLES

Departure from Marseille for your excursion, which will include three stops.

Located in the Natural Regional par of the Alpilles, meaning “baby Alpes”, enjoy a stop in the charming town of Saint-Rémy de Provence , where you will discover a traditional open-air market of Provence (Wednesday morning). The town became also famous cause of the one year stay of the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh.

On your way to the second stop, you will do a picture stop near Les Antiques, the two best preserved monuments from the Gallo-Roman town Glanum.

Arrival at the fantastic medieval perched village of Les Baux de Provence. You will enjoy the walk around in this pedestrian village , where there is combination of architectures style from different century. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the village over the Alpilles area, full of olive trees fields.

To finish your excursion, the stop will be in the ancient Roman Capital of Gaule : Arles.

Discover the rich Roman heritage of the town, such as the Arena, the Theatre, the Obelisk originally located on the Roman circus.... Do not miss, the site painted by Van Gogh, such as the Café Van Gogh, located on the Forum square. Traditional open-air market of Provence on Saturday morning.

AIX EN PROVENCE, MARSEILLE AND CASSIS

You will be commencing your tour with a visit to Aix-en-Provence. A city whereby traditions, culture and nature entwine. An imposing Mount St Victoire standing proudly at 1,011 m is an inspiration to Paul Cézanne; a native of Aix-en-Provence. Explore the town with its daily market at the squares, taste the local speciality 'Calisson' and admire the tens of fountains sprouting everywhere in the « City of a Thousand Fountains »

The winding Gineste and the Crests roads lead you to the majestic Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliffs in Europe. From this point, you will appreciate the spectacular view of the Gulf of Cassis and the Calanques. Cassis is a small charming fishing village which offers the visitors a reception of true provençal authenticity. Board on a 45-minute cruise (ticket included) to discover 3 Calanques, the magnificent white limestone cliffs rising vertically from the sea.

Welcome to the 2nd largest city in France. Sit back and enjoy a panoramic tour of this Phocean city. At the top of the Gard Hill at 154m, is the famous Notre Dame de la Garde or 'La Bonne Mère'. From here, you will enjoy a bird's eye view of the city centre of Marseille. You can spot the Frioul Islands and If Castle (made famous by Alexandra Dumas's Count of Monte Cristo) off the coast. Drive along the Corniche Road, admire the luxury villas built in the 19th century by the wealthy merchants and bourgeois and the promenade. Glimpse of the 11th century St. Victor Abbey.
